Distancing and Disfigurement: Reactions to the Marked Body is organized thematically — by three attitudes towards disfigurement and the parallel contexts they operate within.
The first section of the exhibit, Isolated, explores the relationship between the ‘normal’ public and individuals with leprosy.
The second section of the exhibit, Sensationalized, uses the Freak Show to explore 19th Century Britain and America's attitudes towards disfigurement.
The final section of the exhibit, Erased, explores the complicated experiences of women disfigured by breast cancer, and the dominant attitudes towards their marked bodies during the late-20th century and today.

You might be wondering, how are these different forms of disfigurement, and the experiences they precipitate, related to one another?

Or in fewer words: so what?
